SUMMARY:Artist Talk - Tomothy Gonchoroff
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to announce our newest exhibition “Arundo Domestic” by Timothy Gonchoroff! a captivating exploration of artistry and creativity. \nExhibition Details:\nOpening Date: October 21st\,\nReception/Artist Talk: November 14th\, 1 pm – 4 pm \nTimothy is a fiber and mixed-media artist from Virginia. His work focuses on traditional craft processes\, including natural dyeing\, weaving\, carpentry\, and many others\, as a conduit for investigating and documenting particular elements in environments that are products of an anthropogenic ecology. He is a self-taught weaver that uses a variety of non-traditional materials from unexpected sources such as plastic shopping bags\, vinyl advertising banners\, and videocassette tapes.  At HCCC\, Timothy will continue to introduce elements of materiality\, narrative\, and symbolism in large-scale weavings that incorporate imagery and text. \nArtist Statement:\nThis exhibition delves into the pervasive presence of Arundo donax—commonly known as Giant Cane\, Giant Reed\, or Carrizo—within the Rio Grande Valley. This fast-growing species has not only shaped the ecological landscape of the region’s waterways but has also become a dominant visual element. Historically regarded as an “invasive” species\, Arundo donax is typically seen as a harmful weed. However\, this body of work reexamines its role and potential\, offering a perspective that blends both functional and conceptual interpretations. \nWe extend a warm invitation for you to experience the remarkable artwork that Timothy has created at our upcoming event. Your presence is eagerly awaited. If you have any inquiries or require further information\, please feel free to contact us or visit https://www.southtexascollege.edu/art-gallery/.
